Media Release:

NSW Business Chamber to support workplace relations reforms
NSW’s largest business group NSW Business Chamber has committed itself to working with other business
groups in developing a national information program supporting choice and flexibility within Australia’s workplace relations system. CEO of NSW Business Chamber Kevin MacDonald said Australian workplaces
had developed a winning formula for improving workforce participation, productivity and containing wage price risks in a full employment market. “Real wages are up, unemployment is at record lows, disputes are at record lows and the emergence of a co-operative partnership of employers and employees has seen rewards
of productivity shared. “In such an environment, we believe attempts to re-regulate Australian workplaces are
fraught with risk. In a full employment market, individual agreements are the firebreaks that allow wages growth to occur in specific jobs without creating wage price spirals. “Flexibility in agreement making, be they
collective agreements or individual agreements is also about matching the economic needs of employers with the individual and unique needs of its workforce. This is crucial if Australia is to lift workforce participation in an environment where there are significant skill shortages. Mr MacDonald said NSW Business Chamber agreed to participate in the national information program of employers groups to demonstrate the significance and benefits of flexible workplace relations policies to all Australians. “The Australian economy is strong because successive governments of both political persuasions have pursued policies that have sought to improve the competitive position of Australia. Each time nay-sayers said these reforms would harm the economic prospects of working Australians, and each time those fears were allayed.“The Chamber has made this decision to support the national information program after extensive consultation and deliberation. It was not a decision taken lightly, but in this instance we took the view that we would be failing our members if we did not speak up on this critical economic issue. “Whilst some might interpret the Chamber’s decision through a political lens, they should not do so. We have always sought to encourage good policy outcomes across the political spectrum and this will not change. “Policies that encourage growth and investment from wherever they may originate should be acknowledged and encouraged". If you have any questions regarding this announcement, please do not hesitate to contact
