Shoalhaven Business Chamber newsletter returns!! Unfortunately the building our office was situated in was badly affected by a fire at the end of January. We have been operating temporarily from Financial Dynamics office in Nowra and propose to move into new premises at 81 North Street Nowra on the 12th March with all new equipment and energy! My apologies for the lapse in providing the newsletter to you all, and I trust that you will understand that we have functioned as best as possible under difficult circumstances.

"Spotlight on Business" sessions.
As part of the SBC 2007 action plan "Spotlight on Business" sessions are to be introduced to members meeting forums. Only one session is available per general meeting, and @ $50 per session members have 10 minutes to promote their business and distribute promotional literature. Some dates have already been booked so if you would like to take advantage of this promotional opportunity contact Celeste by email nowracc@shoalhaven.net.au First in first served.

Provides practical training in MYOB & GST book-keeping procedures, Accounting/GST System set-up, transactions & reports.

Highly regarded and stimulating National Customer Service training program. A must for all service providers.
- Senior First Aid Flexible Delivery Mode Dates: 27 Mar (1 day face to face)
Students complete a manual at home/work to prepare for a day of First Aid practical training & assessment.
- OH&S Consultation Program (OHS Workplace Committee) Dates: Commences 27 April (4 Days)
WorkCover accredited qualification for OH&S Committee members, Coordinators, Safety Officers etc.
- OH&S Construction Industry Induction (formally known as the greencard course) Dates: 23 March (½ Day)
Mandatory training as required by WorkCover NSW for Building & Construction Workers.
- Bonded Asbestos Removal Dates: 5 March (½ Day)
WorkCover endorsed course for construction workers who need to undertake mandatory asbestos training to satisfy OH&S legislation & council building codes.
- Scaffolding License Basic Dates: Commences 18 May
Basic Scaffolding training & assessments for anyone wishing to gain a WorkCover approved License.
- Introductory Welding Dates: 2, 9, 16 May
Practical training in arc/gas/oxy welding & cutting. Ideal course for home or workshop requirements and for job seekers looking to upgrade their skills.
- Safety Checking Electrical Appliances (Test & Tag) Dates: Commences 23 May
- Provides the training needed to inspect, test & tag electrical equipment for safety.
- Restricted Electrical Work - Disconnect & Reconnect Dates: Commences 7 May
Provides the mandatory training required to apply for a Restricted Electrical License with Office of Fair Trading
- SMART-train Chemical Application Program Dates: 29 & 30 March
Mandatory training for anyone required to handle, transport or apply chemicals in a rural, horticultural or agricultural situation. Includes EPA & Dept of Agriculture approved ID Card.
- Chainsaw Operations Level 1 Dates: 20 & 21 March
Provides competency based training in safe use of chainsaws for cross cutting & trimming felled trees & timber.
The Rehabilitation Company:
Rehab Co is conducting the Return to Work Co-ordinator WorkCover accredited course. This course is ideal for employers who wish to manage their workers compensation claims more effectively. Flyer attached.
Essential Personnel:
Essential Personnel currently has a Becoming a Worker Course for 12 youngunemployed youth. The Course has started and will run through to May. The Course is a nationally accredited Certificate I in Employability Skills Course that prepares young people for work. The course focuses on self esteem, presentation, interview skills, work ethics & team skills .Part of the course is DevelopingWork Practice a work trial with a localbusiness. We are looking for a 40hr work trial / project for the 12 young participants so they can work together as a team. I'm currently looking for ideas / Suggestions. Shoalhaven Area Consultative Committee: Development Program.
The Shoalhaven ACC is coordinating a Mentoring Forum to be held at Worrigee House Reception Centre on Thursday 15 March commencing at 5.30pm.
The Forum will be attended by relevant agencies that require mentors in their daily operations with young people, the disabled and local business people.
SACC will be inviting people to the Forum who wish to assist as mentors and are seeking clarification of their role and responsibilities.
All SBC members are invited to attend, to register please call Lyn, Carolyn or Donna at the Office Connection on 4422 9011. The Forum will provide the opportunity to discuss with individual agencies all issues regarding mentoring. The Forum will last for approximately 90 minutes and light refreshments will be served.

Financial Management Course: The NSW Dept of Education is subsidizing another small business course, Financial Management for Small Business Owners! The course covers:
- Risk Management for Business
- Introduction to Business Finances
- Manage Finances
- Financial Reporting.
The course willrun from 1 March to 29 August,by distance education (correspondence), with three workshops held throughout the period.
The fee payable to the provider is $164.

Spring Board Business Development Program.
Just when you thought you had missed out ... there are a few places left at the Springboard Business Development Program to start this week in Nowra!
The program is a facilitated peer-to-peer learning program where between 12-15 business peoplemeet weekly for 8 weeks (2 hours per week) to discuss a number of aspects of their businesses, and learn for each other about how to improve their business.This program ran in Nowra late last year and is currently running in Ulladulla, and, fortunately for us, additional funding has become available for a second program to be run in Nowra.
The meetings will commence 1 March for 8 Thursday nights (with the last few negotiable due to school holidays) and the cost is $165 per person (which includes a number of books used during the program).

Web Page Design Course:
The NSW Department of Education & Training is subsidizing a "Web Page Design for Small Business Owners" course to be run in Nowra. Attendees will cover:
- Introduction to WebPages and e-commerce
- Developing a webpage for your business
- Maintaining your webpage as required
- Conducting on-line research.
The cost of the course is $164. There are only 15 places available in this course, which will be run by distance education (correspondence), with learning materials provided and workshop classes held throughout the course.

The inaugural Pathways to Rural Leadership Course is an exciting new opportunity for young people aged 18-35 currently working in agricultural, fisheries, forestry or related industries.
The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry
is seeking motivated young men and women who are eager to take on greater representational and professional responsibilities within their industry.The Pathways to Rural Leadership Course is an advanced leadership course for Australia's best and brightest and will build on the reputation of the Young Rural Leaders Course. Department of State and Regional Development:
Business Drought Assistance Program.
This NSW Government's program provides a range of measures to help established regional non-farm businesses to survive the drought. These include Payroll tax relief for businesses with up to 200 employees. Financial Positioning Assessment and Mini Diagnostic assistance is available to assist non-farm businesses undertake an objective snapshot of their current financial position and develop some possible options for improvement. Business Improvement and Recovery Strategies. Assistance is available for small businesses that need to implement credit or business management strategies to sustain operations during and beyond the drought.
