Media Release:

Kevin MacDonald CEO NSW Business Chamber 8 August 2007.
NSW Business Chamber to support workplace relations reforms and Business Coalition for Workplace
Relations releases television advertisement. Since the early 1980s, Australia has been on a journey of economic reform. It has been a journey that has seen the dollar floated, the entry of foreign banks and new mortgage lenders, the lowering of tariffs, the cutting of high PAYE tax rates and the introduction of the GST and the move away from centralized wage fixation and inefficient work practices. Each time the nay-sayers have warned of economic ruin and each time they have been proved wrong. Our willingness to embrace reform has seen Australia emerge as a strong economy - real wages have risen by 20% since the mid 1990s, 2 million jobs have been created, the economy is currently growing strongly and unemployment has dropped to its lowest level in 33 years. At the workplace level, the removal of inefficient work practices like the unfair dismissal regime and the encouragement of individual contracts have seen businesses, both large and small, employ more people, stay efficient and compete internationally - and we have all shared in the fruits of these changes. Now that we are seeing the benefits of these reforms, we cannot do a u-turn and go back. That is why NSW Business Chamber has joined the Business Coalition for Workplace Reform and has supported a national advertising campaign promoting workplace relations reform. The Council of the NSW Business Chamber endorsed this approach at its May meeting and our participation is a direct result of Council's mandate. As I mentioned to you in an earlier release (refer SBC newsletter 6.8.07), NSW Business Chamber feels an obligation to participate in this debate, primarily because workplace relations reform is creating more jobs, greater productivity, more taxation revenue and more government services which drive more economic growth. As importantly, this concern is shared by 18 other major industry and business associations who collectively represent 350,000 businesses employing more than 4.5 million people. If you have any questions about this campaign or the participation of NSW Business Chamber in this campaign, please do not hesitate to contact kevin.macdonald@nswbc.com.au.
